"To all those my Fellow-townsmen who fared forth to the
Greatest War known to History.
And to the memory of those Gallant Heroes who fell,
nobly fighting in the Cause of Freedom and Justice,
this story of Shoreham is dedicated"

Extract from "The Story of Shoreham" by Henry Cheal - first published in 1921.

The town and port of New Shoreham was established by the Norman Conquerors towards the end of the 11th century. Shoreham’s strategic location and proximity to Normandy made it a logical place to improve facilities for travel and trade. It continued to grow and thrive through the centuries and coaching inns like ours came along to meet the needs of weary travellers and offer them nourishment and rest – much like today really.

While visiting the area, you will find a wealth of sites and echoes of the past to explore. The nature here too is abundant and a treat for all your senses. It is worth taking the time to visit the magnificent church of St Mary de Haura, it was built in the decade following the Doomsday Survey of 1086. There is also a 12th century building in Shoreham High Street, the Marlipins Museum, it is one of the oldest surviving secular buildings in the UK and dates from this time.

We have some amazing festivals and celebrations in the town and surrounding area. The Annual Bath Tub Race, Beach Dreams, The Adur Festival, The Adur Real Ale Festival and The Shoreham Air Show are just a few that really shouldn't be missed.
